Omg wow this is amazing! Thank you so much @Heather Foeh

I spoke in November 2022 at the customer marketing alliance summit in nyc and think it’s a great event!

Hi everyone. Me again.

Happy Hump 🐫 Day!

I’m doing my annual career reflection, late as I usually do this on December, I would love to hear how people moved up or change specialties in marketing.

When you decided to move from individual contributor to people, when you decided you wanted to move from demand gen marketing to customer marketing for example, when you decided you wanted to create marketing strategies and no longer do as much execution of strategies created by others or something else.

I would love to hear how you decided to move to something else, steps you took to make your move, something(s) you wished you would’ve changed or done to be more successful.

Thanks in advance.

PS If you like coffee chats and would like to talk, happy to connect via zoom most mornings from 930am ET.

The rumor is marketers love to and need to be in the office to collaborate and be effective…

I actually hate the office, refuse to go back and are less productive

#discussions - February 06, 2025 at 02:12 PM

@Irwin Hipsman the tool to update, I don’t think they’ve updated all the titles but I was told they would use a tool like zoominfo or something similar for it.

I’ve had some clients more recently, that I’ve consulted with, that’s similar to this scenario so was wondering if I missed the practice of just duplicating prospect work to customer work ie buyer personas for customer personas.

#discussions - February 06, 2025 at 02:00 PM

Thanks everyone.

@Lauren Turner so you’ve actively created campaigns for example email customer upsell campaigns using the buyer personas created? Not using customer personas or something else?

Hi <@U07V02XU2CB> i hope you’re doing well! And you wouldn’t work to create new personas given that a customer would have different concerns about a product performance or knowing their overall goals after implementation than say a prospect?

@Irwin Hipsman you’re right. Of course everyone’s title was not updated, a vast majority were missing BUT RevOps was working on getting them inserted.

#discussions - February 05, 2025 at 05:53 PM

Question. How do you all use personas in your customer growth marketing strategies? I haven’t ever used buyer personas in customer marketing strategies, I’ve used user and customer personas created with the CX org but I’m hearing an organization wanting to use buyer personas for customer marketing so curious if that’s a new best practice

What’s also interesting is that I notice it’s mostly smaller companies wanting these detailed assignments so it’s seems it’s about getting the labor and not assessing the the talent.

And i wonder as you mentioned @Megan Donaldson at Zoom with the rise of AI will assignments truly be effective in knowing if talent can truly to do the role being hired for…

Overall, I wonder if assignments should be eliminated as not only can some potential staff learn the role and honestly people seemingly aren’t l promoted for being the best at doing the work rather for who thinks they have great leadership skills… not that everyone should be a leader but I mean hiring such niche staff will backfire in the long run…

#jobs - January 24, 2025 at 08:19 PM

@Lauren Turner I offered a company past work and they refused so I definitely turned them down without even thinking twice because they refused to pay

#jobs - January 24, 2025 at 05:52 PM

I had an assignment and they said to me to spend no more than 30 minutes on it and I did.

Another company asked me to do an assignment that expected longer, about 4 hours and I asked if they would compensate and said no and I removed myself from consideration.

One company has offered to pay me for what they thought was 2-4 hours of work after I asked. They asked for my invoice and w9.

Not sure if that helps any.

#jobs - January 24, 2025 at 04:02 PM

Honestly I don’t think it’s reasonable but if Zapier is their dealbreaker then I see why they included that… honestly though they must be willing to compensate above market average if they sent that assignment and have those overall expectations for the role

#jobs - January 24, 2025 at 03:48 PM

@Mary Green (Owner CMAweekly) i definitely thought the time was way off on the whole assignment too… i was thinking this is a full day of work at least

#jobs - January 24, 2025 at 03:47 PM

I will say I have the experience for most of what they ask but wouldn’t take this job because these skills are designed for a team. I got most of my experience doing this work form working different roles at different orgs not one role

#jobs - January 24, 2025 at 03:38 PM

I mean in good faith it’s more than fair to ask their budget to pay and how they plan to use it as you may be misaligned in terms of their expectations or budget… if they were getting snarky, then they may pay something less than a $600 because they are expecting a lot of work and detail… also they should document in writing this is only to access your skills for the role… if not then not even worth stressing over, if you’re stressing at all lol hopefully you’re not stressed though

#jobs - October 21, 2024 at 10:24 PM

No worries :)

#jobs - October 21, 2024 at 09:18 PM

Sure but I live in Atlanta, GA, USA

#discussions - October 09, 2024 at 01:35 PM

I haven’t got a lot of similar asks yet which is a bit different than I’ve experienced but will keep that in mind.

#discussions - October 09, 2024 at 01:34 PM

Love that so many people have so many great ideas!! Thank you so much.

So because I was originally hired to focus on growth and the company is starting to launch new products, I think I can build and automate a drip campaign but not the one off requests I get for customer emails such as outages or simply sending blogs posted when they go live which I don’t suggest since the blogs don’t provide customer value.

I suggested an onboarding email journey, created a deck for it, and I created and onboarding email journey in the past for a company in 2020 and was told no multiple times but can try again.

We don’t have a community per se, I’m working on inviting customers who attended our customer event to the LinkedIn group created exclusively for them and working to create content that is relevant and hoping to convince leadership to make the group for all customers to be more effective. As far as acting as an agency, I’m getting a lot of pushback with consulting and told to fulfill the requests being sent to the team and myself versus sharing my expertise but I keep sharing just in case at some point I’m heard. :)

Ironically I asked about other comms channels last week and this week. The CSMs are for some reason having difficulties being open to partnering with me, with leadership having been gone, and instead have voiced since about July, they only want my support in sending their emails but I’ll talk to my manager to see if she can help me reach them.

I have a meeting with the social media manager today so I can ask her today.

Thank you so much again!

#discussions - October 08, 2024 at 05:33 PM

Thank you Irwin! Just registered and can dm you on LinkedIn to connect 1:1 on a call in the next week if that works :)

#discussions - October 08, 2024 at 05:26 PM

Thanks Sarah!

Yes I will focus on continuing to try and make a difference but will keep in mind if I’m not making progress that it’s ok cause it’s still great experience to add to my resume and portfolio.

I look into salesforce trailhead, I’m a HubSpot marketer and mailchimp if it wasn’t obvious lol thank you!!

CSM leadership has been vacant since about June and hasn’t been replaced. The team leads do want me to send emails for them as they say they lack capacity to do customer outreach to their customers.

Again thank you so much!

#discussions - October 08, 2024 at 04:18 PM

Thank you @Sarah Miller I will try to get clarity because as of right now, I’ve gotten that the priority is emails and the entire marketing team should function more like an agency taking requests. What do you suggest I do if I don’t get clarity in the coming weeks or keep getting push back to simply send emails?

I can try to learn more in pardot, I’m terrible at it lol and since salesforce hasn’t invested in making it better at all, it seems tricky. So I’ll try learning some tips and tricks externally. Do you know anyone who is an expert or could suggest some resources?

And yes, I’ve built a deck with a strategy and editing it as we speak. I’m not getting a ton of face time with the team leads sadly so will keep pressing on that.

Thanks so much!

#discussions - October 08, 2024 at 03:54 PM

Please don’t apologize as this is helpful! So thank you so much.

The emails haven’t been really shown value BUT also leadership isn’t really looking at metrics a lot and have pushed back on me working on much else besides emails even when I shared the value of working on other projects…

Overall, I’m just a bit disappointed as I wasn’t hired to send emails and happy to be a team player but I’m not interested in being in Pardot all day or as much as I am. It also doesn’t seem to be helping my career and experience.

I’ll ask for some PT help and see if that will be received.

Again thank you for the insight. I’m happy to hear that I am not the only one thinking that’s a lot of time just to be doing Pardot.

#discussions - October 08, 2024 at 03:46 PM

Thank you for the quick response!

Some of the emails are helpful to the two goals you mentioned but some are simply to help communicate to customers for the CSMs. Also, some of the emails and content being asked to share with customers are simply to share more information about the customer conference we had a few weeks ago. We have a full time email marketing manager but she’s shared that she only does prospect emails only and I am to now take over all customer marketing emails…

#discussions - October 08, 2024 at 03:41 PM

Hi everyone.

I have a question about customer growth marketing in your experiences.

My role was originally designed to focus on strategy in terms of customer lifecycle marketing and crafting emails to enable CSMs to upsell, cross sell customers and manager customer events.

Recently my role is now creating customer emails in Pardot 90% of the time.

I’m concerned that spending most of my time in Pardot is giving me specialized experience but not allowing me to grow in my career. I’ve shared best practices, such as focusing on me managing the customer reference program, focusing on beta testers, increasing online reviews and supporting product marketing.

With that said, how should I continue to voice the value to the business of me focusing on the total role of customer growth marketing and not just writing emails and sending in Pardot everyday.

Hi @Grace Corey,

I’m happy to refer someone great if the recruiter is interested!

#general - June 26, 2024 at 02:05 PM

Another tip is inviting execs to a community, execs LOVE connecting, mostly in person with their peers so that can not be ignored when connecting the first time.

#general - June 26, 2024 at 02:04 PM

We have sent travel gifts to executives to thank them for all that they do and invite them to simply connect with a c suite exec aka a peer at our company via an in person meeting in the coming days. We do that by requesting an email stating the days and times they are available and ensuring that all of the information will only be shared with the executive and the team coordinating the meeting.

#job-seekers - March 05, 2024 at 10:46 PM

No problem! I used to put it under experience BUT it wasn't super helpful especially now having 10 years full time experience...

#jobs - February 07, 2024 at 03:43 PM

Nice tip! I’m gonna try that for sure! Thank you!!

#jobs - February 07, 2024 at 03:23 PM

I have noticed that so I’ve have to really take time longer to search for jobs.

But the positive note, I’m getting interviews for jobs I applied to last month so some companies are actually looking at most if not all applications it seems….

#jobs - January 26, 2024 at 06:38 PM

Sent! Thank you again @Jennifer Lyons

#job-seekers - January 13, 2024 at 05:23 PM

To be transparent, I haven’t been very comfortable being in downtown Atlanta for years…

But I’m hoping that with the election this year, some potential hope or changes come cause it’s not looking great…

On the positive side, I’m seeing a lot more jobs now that it’s January :)

#job-seekers - January 13, 2024 at 05:16 PM

Yeah and I fear about the increase of crime based on history (I was an American History major in undergrad) that’ll inevitably will happen because of the issues regarding economics of people…

#job-seekers - January 13, 2024 at 05:08 PM

I do think it is a political issue that if it’s not resolved soon, their may be another domestic conflict because as we know, when people are desperate or suffering too long, they’ll do whatever it takes to survive sigh and i don’t have a bunker so I’m very concerned

#job-seekers - December 08, 2023 at 04:11 PM

@Cara Peterson omg I feel the same way. A lot of companies do want more than one marketer to do one role which is pretty messed up. But I think the tip was to remind me to show confidence that you have transferrable skills in marketing to get in the door.

Definitely don’t do two or three marketing roles but showing you understand how your specific focus is applicable to other areas and you’ve done research and willing to learn may be helpful.

#job-seekers - December 07, 2023 at 10:55 PM

Thanks again @Joel Primack definitely gonna try that!

#job-seekers - December 07, 2023 at 10:53 PM

That’s a great tip, I never thought to specify a call. Thanks! Have you gotten a lot of feedback that way @Joel Primack ?

#job-seekers - December 07, 2023 at 10:36 PM

I’m sorry @Cara Peterson . It’s hard but you are a rockstar and your perfect role is coming.

Yesterday I met with a friend who told me to maybe change how I’m discussing my experience. While it’s tiring to interview so much and get to the end and not get the role, remember you deserve to be in the room and they agree cause that’s why you’re there. So make sure you remember to show confidence and have more of a conversation on how you can resolve the challenges they’re facing.

He also advised me to remember how to present to execs, they like short high level summaries and connections to how my experience isn’t too specialized. My skills and experience are not just valuable from the depth of my work but the breadth of my experience is super valuable to any organization.

Most importantly, remember there is nothing WRONG with you and the market is just really wonky. Stay positive as 2024 should bring many more and even some better opportunities.

Hope that makes sense and is helpful!

#job-seekers - November 29, 2023 at 01:01 AM

Love the adding value! I definitely do that on a follow up after I’ve had an intro conversation to know what they would value as help.

As an introvert, I don’t worry about quantity, I focus on qualitative relationships so I don’t burn out. Any other introverts, remember engaging in communities like these counts at networking so you always can give yourself credit and take as many breaks as needed. :)

#job-seekers - November 28, 2023 at 09:24 PM

Thanks @Laurie Timms ☺️

#welcome - November 28, 2023 at 05:47 PM

Nice intro! Happy to meet you in this community

#job-seekers - November 28, 2023 at 05:33 PM

Aww thanks Laurie!

#job-seekers - November 28, 2023 at 03:49 PM

Hi @Jennifer Lyons! Yes the market should shift in January as I don’t see many companies hiring and giving offers between now and then which is a bit stressful but I am focusing a lot on networking till then once I wrap up my interviews this week. So hopefully, networking 1:1 and meeting new people via cold outreach on LinkedIn is helpful since a lot of people are winding down and maybe more open to 1:1 chats now than other times of the year.

As far as location, I’ve done United States since about 2019 when I first started remote so I can’t say if it helps but I think it’s a signal to employers that I’ve been remote since 2019 so it’s a huge deal to ask me to be hybrid and if you want me to be hybrid, it’s a premium cost. I add between $20-30k for my base salary request for hybrid and 100% on site is not an option.

#job-seekers - November 28, 2023 at 03:09 PM

That’s terrible… please tell me u didn’t just experience that… there should be no layoffs now until February in my opinion

#job-seekers - November 28, 2023 at 03:06 PM

Happy Tuesday! I hope everyone is doing well! Anyone have any questions about the market, interviewing or anything to help each other out? Happy to support where I can :)

#job-seekers - November 16, 2023 at 07:56 PM

sigh I would love a real honest conversation on why they hired people over me and i would sign something saying I wouldn’t sue them, would I share it with others 100% but they can keep their money. It’s just nice to know that I was a good fit, the company just decided on someone else because of reasons that weren’t merit based…

#job-seekers - November 16, 2023 at 07:48 PM

I almost said that I assume he would be gone @Laurie Timms but either way I’ll be watching with snacks I should be avoiding to lose weight lol lol

#job-seekers - November 16, 2023 at 07:29 PM

I actually don’t get the overqualified anymore. I just get we went with someone who was a better fit which is usually a broad phrase for we just like them better which is usually some unconscious bias they have sigh
