This is a sticky one, and I'm obviously not sure who the client is. But if it's a recognizable name like Ruger or Smith & Wesson, it'll be impossible to skate around it. My thoughts: As much as I'd have the exact same moral quandary as you, I would ultimately try to remove my personal emotion from the decision on how to tell the story. In my opinion, a company shouldn't really be in the business of accepting money from a customer while also policing how they share their successes. It's a weird moral grey area. Unless it's like the literal NRA or something, which would be a much bigger moral issue for me than a manufacturer, I would probably publish the story like any other and have a contingency plan in place if the market has a negative reaction to it. Otherwise you run the risk of pissing off the customer

I have an opportunity for a contract-based Customer Marketing role (minimum 90 days with potential to turn into full time), really strong leadership. Not the right fit for me but happy to discuss with anyone who’s interested!

maybe “Do dogs feel grief?” instead of HEY HAS YOUR BELOVED PUPPY EVER FELT THE SADDEST ANYONE COULD FEEL?

#pets - August 23, 2023 at 05:02 PM

This subject line made me clutch my pearls

#announcements - August 04, 2023 at 04:03 PM

had this sent to me by a former colleague. B2B marketing leaders continue to underprioritize retention and we wonder why CMA roles are the first to get cut 😓

here are our two psychos.. Larry and Lilly

going to echo what others have said in that I have not used it at all yet when it comes to helping develop customer stories. I do see a future where eventually AI will have the capability to produce usable, high-fidelity assets merely by listening to a customer interview. That being said, I'm skeptical as to whether the sort of security guardrails needed to feel comfortable giving that access will ever exist with AI. I feel like I'm also not alone here in really deeply believing in the value of the genuine human element in storytelling, and don't know if I'll ever feel good about giving that over to AI

several have been consumed so far haha. Also heading up to Portland, ME in a couple weeks so the lobster fun has just begun 🦞

#announcements - July 21, 2023 at 02:19 PM

Only taken a couple of local trips so far this summer: a week on cape cod and then Nantucket for a friend’s wedding. I’m not sure anyone enjoyed either trip more than Larry (dog) did

brutal when I was there. every morning there were a bunch of guys raking it all away to keep up the illusion haha

#announcements - July 21, 2023 at 01:49 PM

I was in Tulum in January! love it there. Chichen Itza is so great too, shame you can't climb El Castillo anymore 😓

I tend to try and work pretty closely with our support team anyway (like ongoing customer education & product adoption stuff) so having a good relationship with that team certainly helps the collaboration during crisis mode. I know depending on the company that support and marketing aren't always linked at the hip

#announcements - July 19, 2023 at 08:38 PM

Every time I've been at a company where this has worked smoothly it's been initiated and brought like 80% of the way to completion by Support. Support establishes the overall message we want to convey, adds the important details around the extent of the issue, etc. and then Customer Marketing has taken it from there to edit and finalize copy & handle distribution

#announcements - July 06, 2023 at 04:32 PM

absolute chaos on there right now

#random - May 24, 2023 at 07:29 PM

In my opinion, as long as there is a definitive senior leader, their title means less than the ways in which they approach the role & the level of trust C-level has in them. One of the best senior marketing leaders I've worked for held the title of VP of Marketing but had full trust of executive leadership. Some CMOs i've worked for struggled to be heard. So it depends, in my experience.

#random - May 24, 2023 at 07:27 PM

what's the highest level of marketing leadership they have?

#announcements - May 17, 2023 at 03:25 PM

shared~!

#random - March 28, 2023 at 06:28 PM

incredible on-the-ball creativity from Underdog Fantasy (the Test2 notification) too, though

#random - March 28, 2023 at 06:27 PM

really great real-time, in-the-wild marketing humor

#open-share - February 14, 2023 at 04:46 PM

thanks! i’m not sure there was really a secret to it 😅 I found the opportunity through a former boss, so I would say I heavily leaned on my network, and then just really hit it off with everyone I spoke to. I think just being aggressively authentic has always been my strategy, and people seem to appreciate that

#open-share - February 14, 2023 at 04:39 PM

thanks everyone! very excited

#open-share - February 14, 2023 at 04:18 PM

stoked to share I’ll be starting as the new Sr. Customer Marketing Manager at [Piano](https://piano.io/) on 3/1!

#announcements - February 13, 2023 at 06:17 PM

The Tubi commercial was incredible, one of the more memorable ones for me in recent years

#jobs - February 08, 2023 at 04:48 PM

Going well! Have some really exciting opps that are progressing this week 🙂

#jobs - February 02, 2023 at 08:36 PM

I would be happy to!

#jobs - February 02, 2023 at 07:21 PM

Thanks, definitely at least some nice validation. I haven’t had the chance to speak with anyone directly, but the reviews are… illuminating

#jobs - February 02, 2023 at 07:12 PM

I’m trying to remind myself that it’s ok to be picky when looking for the next opportunity. And not to jump at one just because it’s there. I received an offer yesterday from a company that I’m more than likely going to turn down. A lot of it gut feeling, some of it is some not-so-great Glassdoor feedback. But it’s hard to say no to something when you don’t have anything else to fall back on!

#jobs - February 02, 2023 at 03:32 PM

the VP, Claire, was very lovely. Seems like a decent opp, i’ll keep pursuing it

#jobs - February 02, 2023 at 02:40 PM

@Kyle Tansley taking this call in 20 minutes lol, figured why not

#jobs - January 27, 2023 at 09:44 PM

full portfolio just to apply seems like a huge ask

#jobs - January 27, 2023 at 09:43 PM

I don’t even send in cover letters anymore LOL

#jobs - January 26, 2023 at 06:56 PM

ahhhh so sorry I missed it. was planning on joining and then something came up that pulled me away. thanks for the recap!!
