At Motive, we had one team (or franchise) record videos on ShoutOut and then we created collage videos to be used by our champion to highlight their work/results and get other teams onboard.

@Liza McGraw can you share the ShoutOut pieces you did for Safelite for cross-sell?
#cabs - February 19, 2025 at 02:43 PM
You can start faster. Here's a suggestion ... assuming you have your members locked in (that's a whole separate response that I wrote about
). Use your FIRST meeting to create a CAB charter with the members and just to meet each other. This gives co-ownership of what the CAB is for, what the rules and requirements of engagement are, frequency, etc. Do the first meeting virtually. At the same time, be planning your first in-person CAB meeting as your second CAB meeting 3-4 months from now.#general - February 17, 2025 at 06:45 PM
Yes. 1. Shoutout. 2. Testimonial Hero 3. Agency/crew (happy to refer to agencies!)

Create your own internal committee/board to establish goals and roles/responsibilities …along with what your CAB is and is not. I’d suggest including product management, product marketing, customer success, events. Then get buy in from CMO, CRO, CPO, CCO. Especially budget!

Happy to!

For those of you interested in CAB best practices, here’s a great Q1 checklist from Farland Group.

I also think that a lot of roles are automatically reposted on LinkedIn as part of their “subscription.” If I’m REALLY interested in a role (and haven’t come to some sort of conclusion with the company), I’ll continue networking and working channels.
Then, I remind myself OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN: “If it’s meant for me, it won’t pass me by.”
#discussions - February 14, 2025 at 04:06 PM
No. But I have always provided content for them to showcase their membership as a professional accomplishment. You could also discuss it at a meeting with members. I have also added publicity into the CAB charter for discussion. Happy to talk more 1:1.

Samsara is Motive’s #1 competitor and so I have a strong feeling that they are completely re-evaluating their advocacy strategy since @Liza McGraw and I crushed it competitively in 2023 and 2024 and now @Luis Gonzalez with Liza will continue that trajectory. In addition, Samsara has a new CMO, Meagan Eisenberg, who was previously at MongoDB and Lacework. She is a powerhouse. I met her in 2018 at a conference where she, as CMO at MongoDB, was ALREADY talking about the power of customer advocacy in the marketing mix. I know the main marketing recruiter there so I can tell you that I believe the roles are real.

I typically look at a company’s boilerplate in their press releases to grab a descriptor.
#general - February 07, 2025 at 06:22 PM
One of my former employers still has case studies and customer videos on their website that I created in 2005-2017. That's not a typo. 😵💫

Hi @Emily Coleman In the past, I've set it at 2 years. Made anonymous if account churned, or removed. If a contact left, we removed their name and just used their title.

Set up a video studio in the hotel or an adjacent room. If budget is a concern, use a "tiny mic" format with just a lav mic and your cell phone camera. If there are local reporters, see if you can work with PR to invite customers to have interviews (NOT IN THE MEETING). Make ONE advocacy activity a REQUIREMENT for membership in your CAB. Invite/encourage your CAB members to take photos and to post on social throughout the meeting and tag your company. Create individual social graphics for each member "announcing" them as CAB members and invite members to post on social in advance of the meeting, or during, or after. Give them sample text to make it super easy. Let me know if you'd like to brainstorm some ideas. Make everything optional but "encouraged."

@Aadhi I just had a conversation with Amy Bills at Forrester about collaboration and the "tentacles" customer marketers have across an organization in order to successful. Happy to connect live.

I wanted to share a very unique, delicate and nuanced element of my job search that others might not think about or have to worry about.
I have a transgender daughter. Imagine getting to a final round of interviews or even an offer only to find out that your potential employer's health coverage has a blanket exclusion for medically necessary gender-affirming care for transgender employees and their dependents.
Now, imagine requesting a copy of a company's "evidence of coverage" which is typically a 100+ page document (not the summary of benefits) and not being able to get it because recruiters don't have access to it. Now imagine that employer instructing you to call the healthcare provider for confirmation details who will not talk to you because you are not yet an employee and the details are confidential.
To even try to get the information I need to make an informed decision about the company, I have to reveal very sensitive, private details about my family and my daughter that, depending on the employer, hiring manager(s) or leaders, might not allies of transgender people? ❌ (Truth: if that's the case I wouldn't want to work for them anyway, but that's not the point. lol)
Now, imagine another potential employer that lists gender-affirming care details on their Careers webpage within the context of all other medical benefits and it's included right on the summary of benefits. ❤️
Has anyone else faced similar challenges in their job search process relating to medical exclusions?

I also just read "Likeable Badass" and it is an awesome book to feel empowered, specifically women. A lot of the tips are applicable to interviews.

I just posted this and I'd love input from the group! Thoughts?
#jobs - January 27, 2025 at 05:02 PM
This suggestion might be counter-intuitive and some may advise against it. Apply to jobs that are slightly beneath your expected or past title. Get interviews. Rock them. Negotiate to up-level the role.

All. The. Time.
If you have recommendations from others on LinkedIn, print them and read them frequently. If you don't, send requests to a handful of people via LinkedIn. I find that, when I can't convince myself that I'm a bada** ... other people can.
#jobs - January 24, 2025 at 08:27 PM
@Natalie Gullatt I did the same. Offered to talk through (not give) an example of a previous project. I'm at complete peace with my decision on that.
#jobs - January 24, 2025 at 06:00 PM
I was asked to give a 45 minute presentation with about 4 hours of prep for a role. I asked if it was a paid consulting assignment. The recruiter was pretty shocked by my question. The assignment was to be presented to the hiring manager whom I had already met. This project would have been in round 4 of interviews. Very politely, I said I would be happy to have another call with the hiring manager and talk through my approach to whatever the prompt was about, perhaps with a few framework slides. I was cut from the role this morning. I truly believe: "If it's meant for me, it won't pass me by!"

ReferenceEdge has a "profile update reminder" feature where you can send a request for reference profile updates. It's not perfect, but it helps automate. I've seen contests with incentives work well too. Teams love to compete against each other.

I'm presenting at the Customer Marketing Summit in NYC in March about the intersection of customer marketing and customer success and the power of the two functions in unison. What topics within that framework would you be most interested in? What's top of mind for everyone? I'll be co-presenting with a customer success leader I've worked with previously. 🎤

I have had great success with SPIFFs when designed well. We ran a SPIFFs only with a specific segment (enterprise CSMs, not AEs). We avoided potential conflicts and competition with AEs who might want to nominate the same contacts. (AEs weren't really motivated by small SPIFFs anyway, whereas CSMs were highly motivated because they are not on commission.) The SPIFF was for ACCEPTED/APPROVED nominations, not just nominations. We had alignment from our Chief Customer Officer down to the other post-sales leaders and conducted a series of enablement sessions and other communications, especially celebrating wins and highlighting the CSMs who were most engaged. We ran the SPIFF for one month as we launched the nominations module of ReferenceEdge. Result: 430 new reference contacts in 30 days. We did not SPIFF for ongoing reference activity. This was an initial push to build the bench of references and to get our CSMs into ReferenceEdge and using it.

@Shannon Howard contracts is such a big issue. Would love to learn how you're using Airtable. I was thinking about integrating Ironclad with ReferenceEdge when I was at Motive. That way contracts would come out of legal with publicity terms and flow right into advocacy platform.
#general - January 08, 2025 at 07:19 PM
@Evan Jacobs I love this! We did something similar with our sales team at one of their QBRs. AEs were paired up to work together to create an elevator pitch for a customer story. We broke them into small-ish groups to pitch to each other. SVP picked random people to pitch onstage ... and he'd randomly call out others throughout the event to pitch on the spot. Let me know if you want to talk it through! I love the idea of doing this within marketing.

@Tim Jahn Does your product have in-app messaging? If so, run a pop-up in app with an offer in exchange for recording a video answer to one question. (We did this with a $25 Starbucks gift card and got 200 responses in about 2 hours. We had to shut it off because it was so successful.) This might not be what you're looking for!
#cabs - January 08, 2025 at 06:28 PM
Hi @Mara Schoeppner It's really tough to do unless all your CAB members are in that same region where the CAB is being hosted. In the past, I have mapped out where all of my CAB members are located and then looked at possible flights for those days. To meet our goals around membership, our members were very dispersed and so a 1-day program just couldn't work. One of the best ways to reduce costs is to bookend your CAB with another event - either your own event or an event that many of your CAB members are already attending.

Done this multiple ways including Google Form, but also used whatever platform was being used for call for papers when the awards were aligned with an event. These platforms often have a "module" for awards and it can be nice to have it all in one platform.

💝 Happy holidays, everyone! I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone in this community. The kindness, helpfulness and genuine compassion for each other is truly astounding. Everyday, knowledge is shared, authentic care is demonstrated and introductions are made. I'm inspired by so many of you and grateful to so many of you. I hope everyone will have many days off this holiday season to spend with family, friends and loved ones in their circle. Here's to an amazing 2025 for all of us! 💝

G2 allows you to also segment by SMB, Midmarket and enterprise. Depending on what's most relevant to your audience, you could shift your message to that category and/or slice the data by industry. If you purchase the reports, you can also get even more granular on other stats and ROI.

I wanted to share with the community that I recently decided to leave Motive. My reasons are private. I am at peace with my decision and confident that it was the right decision for me. I'm beginning to have discussions about future opportunities ... but first, I'll be taking a much-needed transatlantic cruise with my husband (a belated honeymoon). This community is incredibly supportive and I felt compelled to share this news more broadly with the group.

@Emily Coleman Happy to chat! I used a tool called ShoutOut. (There are others like it. Some have free versions too.)
