#10-community

Received an email from Higher Logic today promoting their blog advocating for the use of an owned platform vs using facebook or LinkedIn etc. I didn’t read the email or blog, but my thought with VC, mergers, acquisitions, etc. is an ‘owned’ platform safe either? Just thought I’d throw that out for discussion, including how to continually evolve and future proof your programs in this context.

I think there are a lot of interesting and valid points in the post. I’d equally it depends on a number of factors, including:
• Budget
• Breadth of programs
• People resourced to the community program
• Tolerance for risk
• Ability to be creative with your community buildout
• Where your members want to gather, if at all, in a conversational place
There is a reason why Tightknit (S/O to @Zach Hawtof and team) are building a community platform for Slack-first programs.

Is anything really owned? I think about this often. Even Slack or Higher Logic are owned by someone else. Other people make the decisions about the platform.

Good points, Joel. Owning the data is very important.
