Beyond supporting a community via Influitive five years ago, I haven’t owned community, but I think it’s something I would enjoy and I think doing some of the free courses will be adequate. I read David Spinks book years ago and liked it, but dropping $500 on another course right now isn’t something I want to do!

With the job market the way it is right now, I don’t think I’ll get the chance to try much in the way of community work without significant prior hands-on experience.

@Joel Primack would love your generalized take on the market. It seems like all the JD’s and the recruiters/hiring managers can ask for proven experience…as well as desire for specific tools used.
