Question if anyone’s available. Do you put industry group memberships on your LinkedIn, and if so, in what section?

Laurie Timms March 05, 2024 at 10:45 PM

Thanks! I was given that advice by someone but I wasn’t sure.

No problem! I used to put it under experience BUT it wasn't super helpful especially now having 10 years full time experience...

I do it differently, when it’s been applicable to me, FWIW.

I put it under Experience for a couple of reasons. The biggest being able to see “Connections” at the same community/network/association to use when searching for mutual connections, etc.

And, you can explain what it is, roles/successes in it, etc., as well as keep it higher up on your LinkedIn profile. TBH, I don’t recall the last time I got down to someone’s Volunteer section.

Thank you both. @Joel Primack I currently have it in experience, but the career person I spoke with today pointed out it is pushing down the names of the companies I’ve worked for so recruiters don’t see them right away. So I may move them down for now.

Why not move your past employers to your headline?

Something like: Experienced Customer Marketing & Advocacy Professional or Leader | Ex. Splunk, etc., etc.

Laurie Timms March 05, 2024 at 11:54 PM

Actually, I’m going to do that too. The industry groups I have are Forbes Communications Council and CMA, so I’m okay moving them down.

Here’s my profile with the full headline for how I do it, FWIW, Laurie 😊
