Found a job I am very interested in. Got a referral to the hiring manager who was impressed with my background. Several people at company looked at my LinkedIn profile and I was invited to interview. Had phone screen today with recruiter and she said I was overqualified…They feel the role is a ‘lead’ and not even a manager, yet they want someone to implement their program from the ground up. I am so deflated. Anyone successfully get past this ‘overqualified’ label?

Is 'overqualified' code for 'too expensive'? I've seen a lot of companies with job descriptions that should be senior level roles, but they have a very junior level budget. Seems unlikely to lead to a good fit for either the company or the person they end up hiring, but I think there are a lot of companies out there so focused on saving money that they're not really thinking about whether they are being realistic.

I was told I was overqualified by the hiring manager. Had the call then got the rejection email 😞

I’m hearing this a lot lately from others and I’ve heard it directed at me. I’m sorry.

I have also heard this often, and it’s very frustrating. My strategy for getting around this is making sure to mention that I’m more interested in the right company and right role than a specific dollar amount when the interviewer asks about your desired salary range. I’m not sure if this works, but it’s just an idea.
