Cover letters and thank you notes: old school or much needed? If yes on thank you notes, who do you include? Recruiter for phone screen? Hiring manager only? What practice do you like to follow?
Everyone gets a thank you video note from me.
No to cover letters ❌
@Joel Primack including screeners?
@Joel Primack which app do you like to use? Have you ever gotten feedback on your practice?
I do video thank you notes for the recruiter & everyone I speak with as part of the process (not interact with — e.g., a recruiter coordinator doesn’t get one for solely helping schedule a call. They’ll get a thank you via email.
I use Drift Video (free).
Feedback: Positive & have never heard anything negative words about my video thank you notes.
However, personally, I’ll say do something that’s authentic to you to help you stand out, @Jennifer Lyons. This is authentic to me for 2 main reasons:
• In a role, I send Loom videos regularly and have my camera on normally for video calls.
• I host a podcast, so I’m very comfortable and confident recording myself and then hitting send.
This is why I believe it works well for me and others should do something that’s authentic to who they are to help rise above the rest during the interview process.
Thanks for the deeper dive. It actually sounds pretty efficient over laboring over letters. @Joel Primack How do you time sending your follow-ups?
Usually an hour or so after the call concluded with a separate LI Connection request note referring to the video thank you note to drive people to the email.
To me, it’s effective and efficient while giving me data that might help me make a reasonable prediction my candidacy for the role. It hits the right balance of everything I want to achieve 😊
I always send thank you notes. Make sure they are custom to the conversation that we had and I usually send them right after but sometimes if it’s later in the day I send them the next day.
I love the video idea Joel. Might have to try that.
I used to do cover letters, but I truly believe no one reads them so I’ve stopped. Also, when I am hiring and receive cover letters, I think I’ve only ever read one.
@Joel Primack I’m interested to know more about your experience with LinkedIn connection requests. I’ve only done this a few times and in most cases they don’t accept. I figured it might be considered inappropriate. What does everyone think?
